There are many types of professional photographers that have been hurt by the fact that just about everyone has a camera in their pocket, but probably none of them have been hurt more than the photo journalist.
Newspapers, magazines, and even TV news programs are looking for action photos showing an event as it occurs. The people capturing these photos are often the public and not professional photographers. Most of these news outlets care little about quality of the photo.
This is painfully clear today when the Chicago Sun-Times laid off their entire photo staff. Why pay the salary and other benefits for 20 employees when the public will give you photos for free. In those cases where you know of a news even ahead of time you can simply use a freelance photographer.
Hopefully these photographers saw the writing on the wall years ago and have been planning for the inevitable. What other professional photography genre is next?
